Benjamin Barnes, known as Bencasso, believes that storytelling is crucial for artistpreneurs.
The phrase “facts tell, stories sell” reflects how stories connect emotionally with audiences. Barnes emphasizes that every aspect of an artistpreneur’s life—from creative pursuits to business challenges—can shape their unique brand narrative, making them relatable and memorable. His guidance encourages artists to draw from diverse experiences, ensuring their stories resonate and inspire their audience.

Today, we’re diving into the power of storytelling in business. As the saying goes, “Facts tell, but stories sell.” This couldn’t be more true for artistpreneurs like us. Facts are essential; they outline what we do, our achievements, and our services. But facts alone can feel flat. They lack the emotional spark that stories bring.
Why are stories so powerful? Simply put, stories are memorable, emotional, and relatable. They humanize our work and connect us to our audience on a deeper level. When we share our journey—our challenges, triumphs, and even failures—we become more than just a brand. We become relatable, approachable, and inspiring.
As artistpreneurs, we have unique stories that many traditional businesses don’t. Our journeys as creators, the moments of inspiration, our breakthroughs, and the setbacks we face along the way all shape who we are and what we offer. Maybe it’s how a painting helped you find healing, or how a piece of music transformed someone’s life. These aren’t just nice anecdotes; they’re the heart of your brand story. They communicate your purpose, passion, and authenticity.
So, how can we start weaving storytelling into our business? First, look at the major themes in your life and work. Perhaps you’ve overcome personal challenges, as I have with mental illness. Or maybe you’ve had to relearn your craft after a setback, like when I relearned music after a life-altering accident. Your struggles and successes are not only part of your life, but also resonate with your audience. They build empathy, making your story unforgettable.
Next, think about your values. What do you stand for? What’s your mission? For me, it’s been about using art and music to promote mental health and cultural education. By clearly stating my mission, I connect with audiences who share similar values, allowing them to see a part of themselves in my story.
Finally, share the stories behind your work. For example, if you’re a musician, what inspired a particular song? If you’re an artist, what motivated a piece? Every piece you create has its own backstory that can draw people in. Each story adds layers to your brand, allowing others to experience your work on a personal level.
Remember, the key to effective storytelling is authenticity. You don’t need to embellish your experiences; just share what’s true for you. When your story is genuine, it’s powerful. It resonates with your audience because they see themselves in your journey.
So, to all my fellow artistpreneurs, don’t just stick to the facts. Let your story shine, and watch
how it transforms your business. Embrace your journey—every success, every setback—and share it. Because, in the end, facts tell, but stories truly sell.
