US Bans Huawei and ZTE Equipment Sales Citing National Security Risk

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Despite the ban, Chinese firms continue to export to the US. They spend more than $11 billion per year supplying products to US firms. They also continue to import products into the US.

The US has taken a hard line against Chinese companies in the past. Amongst other things, US officials have been wary of Chinese spying. This is one of the reasons they have banned the use of some China made video surveillance systems.

The US has also banned the sale of new telecommunications equipment made by Huawei and ZTE. The latest move is one of several the US has taken against Chinese tech firms over the past two years. The FCC is tasked with protecting the country’s citizens. It also has the power to rescind prior authorizations of certain items. It has no doubt taken on the task of protecting the country’s networks and assets. The agency has the ability to make the right decision at the right time.

The FCC has actually decided to ban the sale of some telecommunications equipment produced by the two Chinese firms in question. It is expected that the agency will make a final decision by June 2021. Although the FCC has not yet released the new rules, some industry sources estimate that the agency could make a decision as early as today. The new rules could have a significant impact on small businesses and local governments in the US. The new rules will also prevent the sale of some products in the name of national security.
