How to Find a Good CPA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The first step in finding a good CPA is to look outside of your city or state. Most accountants will specialize in specific industries or niches. In order to find a good CPA, ask around among friends, family members, and even doctors. You can also ask people you know who have used a particular CPA for their needs. This will help you avoid making the mistake of contacting someone who does not offer the services you need.

It is also important to find a CPA who is willing to work on your tax return. You can ask prospective CPAs if they have experience in your industry or have worked for other companies in your industry. Moreover, ask them how much time they will dedicate to your case. You should also find out if they will travel to your location or work from their office. If you are not sure about these things, you may want to look for a different CPA.

A good CPA should have a broad understanding of the tax code. They should also be experienced with electronic filing of tax returns. The IRS requires CPAs to offer e-filing services to their clients. If they cannot do e-filing, they are not experienced enough to work with you. Also, be wary of CPAs who refuse to sign their clients’ contracts. If they refuse to sign a contract or offer to work by phone, look for another CPA.

Also, get clarity on how the CPA will bill.   Will you pay the same amount per hour, no matter what type of work is being done?  Find out who in the CPAs office does specific tasks and what the billing rate is for each person. Keep that in mind when asking for help from your CPA.

Expert accounting is imperative to protect yourself and your business.
